Joint briefing on video and audio links in the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill 2021

This briefing, produced in collaboration with Fair Trials and Just For Kids Law, outlines our concerns around proposals to expand the use of remote hearings via video and audio links in criminal proceedings in the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill. We argue that proposed measures would significantly impact the right to a fair trial and equality in the criminal justice system. Specifically, if implemented they may infringe on the right to a fair trial, restrict access to legal advice and effective representation, lead to disproportionately severe outcomes, and disadvantage vulnerable defendants, among other concerns.
