Ep65: Prison in the community – probation in crisis?

Alexandra Kimmons
20 Oct 2026

New policy will funnel more people into the probation system. But after multiple restructures, and with recall rates soaring, will the system be able to cope?

Hosts Penelope and Rob are joined by two former probation officers Su McConnel, an active member of the union NAPO, and Kelly Grehan, Policy Manager at Revolving Doors. They discuss how probation has changed, why the service is struggling to retain staff, and the impact of the increasing focus on punishment over rehabilitation.
